HISTORY

Immerse Yourself in Our History

Step inside the Frontier House and travel back to 1824, when this remarkable building first opened its doors as a haven for weary travelers. Built by Joshua Fairbanks and the Barton family, the Frontier House quickly became a landmark of hospitality and innovation, serving as an inn, stagecoach stop, and gathering place for locals and visitors alike.

Over the years, the Frontier House has worn many hats: it’s been a hotel, a private home, a fine dining restaurant, a museum, and even a fast-food spot. In fact, many locals remember the basement most recently as a McDonald’s, which operated here from 1977 until 2004. After McDonald’s closed, the building sat vacant for years, but its sturdy stone walls and classic architecture remained a fixture in Lewiston’s landscape.
